Madeira is renowned for it's beautiful levada walks and breathtaking scenery. Casa Velha is also ideally situated to explore the island, certainly as near to nature as one can get. The gardens at “Quinta do Palheiro”, to which the hotel guests have privileged and private access, are famous not only for the variety of plants that grow there but for the beauty of their setting in the hills to the east of Funchal, the capital of Madeira.

The Palheiro gardens are situated at about 500 metres above sea level. The original owner, the Conde de Carvalhal, planted many trees on the estate and laid the foundation to the Camellia collection; some of his early plantings can still be seen today. Since 1885 when the Quinta passed into the hands of the Blandy family, successive generations have given much work and devotion to the gardens.
